A smaller stomach. A bigger life.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with oversewing and omentum re-attachment: three layers of protection, refined over thousands of operations by Consultant Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Barrak Alhaifi.
This is your stomach.
It can hold up to about 1.5 litres. Its curved upper part, the fundus, produces most of ghrelin, the hormone that drives hunger.
Triple protection. Because every step matters.
Sleeve gastrectomy with oversewing and omentum re-attachment is the standard approach at Dr. Alhaifi’s clinic, refined over thousands of sleeve operations since 2007.
Staple line
The stomach is reduced with a precise longitudinal cut using a surgical stapler. For most surgeons, the operation ends here.
Oversewing
The staple line is enfolded inward and sewn with the serosa, the strongest layer of the stomach wall, adding a second layer of protection.
Omentum re-attachment
The omentum is fixed back in its natural place on the stomach, completing the third layer of protection.
Figures from Dr. Alhaifi’s own surgical experience. Individual risk is discussed at consultation.
“I personally take these extra steps because I believe every patient deserves every additional step that helps ensure the operation succeeds.”
The choice is yours: a standard sleeve, or the safer triple-protection sleeve.
Approximate figures. Individual results vary.
Is a sleeve right for you?
Based on the 2022 ASMBS/IFSO guidelines. Final eligibility is decided during your consultation.
BMI of 35 or higher
Whether or not you have obesity-related conditions.
BMI of 30–34.9 with metabolic disease
Such as type 2 diabetes, when other treatments have not worked.
Previous attempts
Diet, exercise or medication have not led to lasting weight loss.

Ready for lifelong nutrition follow-up and regular activity.
Your journey, step by step.
Before surgery
Consultation, blood tests, endoscopy or imaging as needed, and a short pre-operative diet to shrink the liver.
Day of surgery
About 1–2 hours in theatre under general anaesthesia. Most patients are walking the same day.
Weeks 1–2
Clear liquids, then full liquids. Most people return to light activity and desk work.
Weeks 3–4
Puréed foods, with protein first at every meal.
Week 5 onward
Soft, then regular textures in small portions, with daily vitamins for life.

Things to consider.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a safe, well-established operation, but like any surgery it carries risks. Dr. Alhaifi will review them with you in detail.
Permanent
Part of the stomach is removed and cannot be restored.
Reflux
Some patients develop heartburn, or find it gets worse, after surgery.
Nutrition
Lifelong vitamins and follow-up blood tests are needed.
Surgical risks
Bleeding or a leak from the staple line are uncommon, and are exactly what the triple-protection technique is designed to reduce.
Common questions.
A standard sleeve ends after stapling. Triple protection adds two steps: oversewing the staple line with the stomach’s serosa, and re-attaching the omentum. In Dr. Alhaifi’s experience, this lowered leak and bleeding rates from about 4% to under 1%.
No. Because part of the stomach is removed, a sleeve gastrectomy is permanent. If needed, it can be converted to another procedure later.
The incisions are small, typically 5–12 mm, and usually fade well over time.
Many people return to desk work within 1–2 weeks. Physically demanding jobs may need 4–6 weeks.
Yes. A daily multivitamin and periodic blood tests are part of lifelong follow-up.
Some enlargement over the years is possible. Following your eating plan helps protect your result.
